Ruben Barajas is an artist, singer, and songwriter of Wild Records' band Wenzdaze. Wenzdaze has written songs such as 'My Love,' the fan favorite 'Creeper Stomp,' and their latest release, 'Rose.' In this interview, we go behind the scenes into musician life, live performances, and the process of songwriting.
1. Every show has an atmosphere and a life of their own. It’s one of my favorite things. What do you like the most about performing live music?
Performing and experiencing live music is a drug called “adrenaline”. As the real world slips away you become the music. Even though you are awake you are still hypnotized by the ear piercing sounds coming from the speakers. There is no judgment, you can be your true self. It is the best 30 minutes of your life.
2). As a singer/songwriter, how many songs have you written? What is your process for writing lyrics? Are they often based on life experiences?
I’ve probably written lyrics to a little less than 100 songs at this point in life. I tend to write lyrics based on real stories/experiences. I like to tell myself the “process” to writing songs is to go out and live ! make memories and stories to tell in your songs. I feel if I study poetry my lyrics and ideas will be too technical and won't appeal to the masses.
3). Open Spotify and choose a song you like. Why that song? (Will be included in the ‘Listen as you view’ portion of the ‘zine. This will be a spotify playlist of the interviewee’s fav songs as well as bands included in the issue)
At the moment the song “Lovers rock” by TV girl has been stuck in my head. I love the lyrics and the music. I'm not sure what genre it is but I think if the hip hop sample era and indie music had a baby. It's magic.
3b). Link streaming platforms or socials to be included in the ‘zine. (Wenzdaze insta, youtube channel, spotify, etc.)
